Most travel savings advice asks you to have a worse time — skip the tour, eat at the supermarket, stay an hour outside town. These nine cut the bill without cutting anything that made you want to go.
1. Move the dates before you move the standard
The same hotel in Puglia is €180 in mid-May and €340 in mid-July, for a better week of weather. Shifting a trip by three weeks routinely saves 25–40%, and there is no downside except telling your colleagues later.
2. Fly midweek, arrive rested
Tuesday and Wednesday departures are typically 15–25% cheaper than Friday and Sunday, and the airports are calmer. If you can also avoid the first weekend of a school holiday, do.
3. Pay for location, not for square metres
A small central room beats a large room forty minutes out, every time. You will save the difference in taxis alone, and you will get the evening walk home that turns out to be your favourite part of the trip.
4. Book the thing that sells out; improvise the rest
Reserve the timed-entry museum, the one restaurant, the boat day. Leave the rest open. Over-booking a trip locks you into paying for things you no longer feel like doing.
5. Eat your big meal at lunch
In Italy, Spain, Portugal and France, the same kitchen serves a set lunch at half the dinner price. Eat properly at 1 p.m., graze in the evening. This is not a compromise — it is how locals do it.
6. Two nights minimum, everywhere
One-night stops cost you a transfer, a check-in, a repacking and the good half of two days. Three bases beat six in every measure including money.
7. Use the trains that are actually fast
Rome to Florence is 90 minutes city centre to city centre, booked at €19 two months ahead or €65 on the day. European rail pricing rewards planning more aggressively than airlines do.
8. Skip the things that are famous for being famous
Some €40 attractions are worth it. Many are a queue and a gift shop. Ask one local — a hotel receptionist, a bartender, your guide — "would you take a visiting friend here?" and listen to the pause before the answer.
9. Buy insurance, ignore the extras
Travel insurance is the one line item that saves money in expectation. The rental car's third excess-reduction product, the airport fast-track, the prepaid transfer at triple the taxi fare: those are the ones to decline.
What we do not recommend cutting
The guide, on the day it matters. The right neighbourhood. One good meal per destination. A trip that costs 15% less and is 40% less enjoyable is not a saving — it is just a cheaper trip you will not remember.
