12 Places Worth Booking for 2027 (And Exactly When to Go)

Every January, someone publishes a list of forty destinations for the coming year. Nobody can go to forty places. Here are twelve we would actually book for 2027, with the month that makes each one worth the airfare.

We choose destinations the way we choose restaurants: by season, by crowd, and by whether the thing you came for is actually happening when you arrive. A place can be extraordinary in May and merely fine in August. So this list is really twelve place-and-month pairs.

Spring: the best value in travel

1. Puglia, Italy — May

The sea is warm enough by mid-May, the white towns are empty on weekday mornings, and the burrata is made that day. July doubles the prices and halves the pleasure.

2. Kyoto, Japan — late March into April

Blossom season is chaos with a payoff. The trick is to be somewhere before 7 a.m. every day and to accept that the forecast moves. Book eleven months out or don't book at all.

3. Alentejo, Portugal — April

Green, empty, wildflowered, and roughly half the price of the Algarve an hour south. Cork oaks, whitewashed villages, and dinners that cost less than lunch in Lisbon.

4. Piedmont, Italy — April

Truffle season is autumn, but April gives you the vineyards waking up, cellars with time to talk, and Barolo producers who will actually sit down with you.

Summer: go north or go high

5. The Dolomites, Italy — August

The one place in Italy where August works: 1,800 metres of altitude, cable cars instead of car parks, and hut lunches. Book accommodation by February.

6. The Cyclades, Greece — early June

Sea at 22°C, tavernas fully staffed, and the July crush still five weeks away. Naxos and Paros over Mykonos, every time.

7. Scotland and Ireland — late July

The one window with long light, open mountain roads and music in the pubs. Bring the waterproof anyway.

8. Iceland — September

Summer crowds gone, roads still open, and the nights finally dark enough for aurora. The best week of the Icelandic year, and the least booked.

Autumn and winter: the underrated half

9. The Danube — October

Vineyard colour through the Wachau, cool mornings, and cities that belong to their residents again. River levels are usually kind in October.

10. Morocco — February

Marrakech at 20°C while northern Europe is grey, snow on the Atlas behind you, and desert nights cold enough to need the fire. Ramadan dates move each year — check before booking.

11. Central Europe's Christmas markets — early December

Go in the first ten days. The stalls are fully stocked, the crowds have not arrived, and hotel rates are a third lower than the week before Christmas.

12. Antarctica — late December into January

Peak season for a reason: penguin chicks, 20 hours of light, and the most stable weather window of the year. This is a two-years-ahead booking, not a two-months-ahead one.

The one rule underneath all of this

Pick the month first, the place second. A mediocre destination in its best week beats a famous one in its worst, and it usually costs less. If you take nothing else from this list, take that.

Reading about it is nice. Going is better.
